5 Reasons Why You Should Buy A Nintendo Wii In 2020 Gamer Central

Written By Jack Thompson

On November 19th, 2006, Nintendo released one of their best selling consoles of all time, the Nintendo Wii! Despite it being released almost 15 years ago, the Wii is still a great console to own! If you never owned a Wii and you're considering buying one or if you used to have one and you would like to experience the Wii again, here's why you should buy one in 2020!

5: Wii's are cheap right now on eBay, Mercari, OfferUp, etc.

The Nintendo Wii has sold 101.63 million units and since most people consider it obsolete or outdated, that means there's a lot of people selling their Wii's. Right now is definitely the time to buy one because I have a feeling they are going to go up in price in a few years. The Wii Games and Wii Accessories are very cheap too so if you're buying a working Wii Console without any cables, controllers, or games then that's not a big deal because you can get those for cheap too! If you're also handy with tools and electronics and you know how to repair stuff than you get a broken Wii for dirt cheap and repair it! You can also get a Wii (Or any item) for $10 OFF on Mercari which is a great deal! So if you find a Wii for $30 that means its only $20! Any item $25 or more on Mercari is qualified for the $10 OFF Coupon. To get your $10 OFF Coupon, Sign Up with my Mercari Invite Link: https://merc.li/mU3WNJb

4: The Wii is GameCube Backwards Compatible

Another great reason you should buy a Wii is that its also a Nintendo GameCube! So you're basically getting two consoles in one! So if you ever get bored with your Wii games then you can always play GameCube games! There are 657 GameCube games so that's a huge selection! There's also a lot of Wii games that allow the GameCube controller such as Mario Kart Wii! Though when you're buying Wii make sure its the RVL-001 Model because the Wii RVL-101 Models and Wii Mini's are not GameCube backwards compatible. If you're buying a Wii online make sure to read the description to see if its the RVL-001/GameCube Compatible version and ask the Seller if it is. If you find one at Yard Sale, Goodwill or Thrift Store look at the Serial Number label on the bottom of the Wii Console and then you can see if the Model Number is RVL-001 or another easier way to tell is to flip open the lid on the top of the Wii console to see if it has the GameCube Controller Ports and GameCube Memory Card Slots.

3: Homebrew Adds So Many Features To The Wii
Some of you might have heard of this. The Homebrew Channel is a Channel/Application that you can install on your Wii using an SD Card that adds so many awesome features to your Wii! Once you've added this it almost doesn't feel like the Wii is obsolete anymore! It's Free and very simple to do and there are some great Tutorials on how to install it! If you're wondering "Why should I do this?" or "What features does it add?", well here are some of the features it adds:

  1. Retro Console Emulation: Once you have Homebrewed your Wii you can play a ton of classic games from these retro consoles including NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo DS! Though its not just retro Nintendo consoles that you can emulate, you can also emulate, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Atari 8000, Atari LYNX, Atari XL Atari XE, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Game Gear, Sega MegaDrive, Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Playstation 1 and even DOS! If you're wondering, "How do I play those games on my Wii?", well obviously you can't insert the cartridges in your Wii but you play the games using the Digital File of them, also known as ROM's and you can play them using applications called Emulators on the Homebrew Channel. It might sound complicated but trust me, it's super easy, all you have to do is download files on your SD Card and you should probably watch some tutorials.
  2. DVD Player: It allows your Wii to play DVDs! Sony's Playstation 2 was very popular because of the DVD Player feature but its odd Nintendo didn't allow the Wii to play DVDs. But with a Homebrew Application called DVDX, it allows the RVL-001 Wii Models to play DVD's so now you can watch movies on your Wii without having to have a DVD Player hooked up, so that means fewer cables in your TV stand! I know most people don't use DVD's these days but in case you do, this is a great feature!
  3. The New Wii Online Community: Nintendo's Online Service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was was shut down on May 20th, 2014 due to the release of the Wii U and because the server host company, GameSpy, was shutting down its servers. But thankfully a new service called Wiimmfi allows you to play your Wii games online again with players around the world who have Homebrew and the Wiimmfi Service, Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros Brawl are a great example of this! Make sure to watch some tutorials on how to use Wiimmfi.
2: The Wii has a huge variety of great games
There are 1543 Wii Games released and that's not even including the 657 GameCube games I mentioned earlier! So that's a total of 2.200 games, hours of entertainment and fun! I have to admit, GameCube games aren't that cheap but right now you can buy some great Wii games for very cheap, you can even get popular Nintendo games for cheap like Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Party 8, etc. The games don't even look outdated, especially Super Mario Galaxy!

1: Buy It For The Memories
This last reason might sound silly to some of you but if you used to own a Wii as a kid and you don't have one anymore because it broke, or you traded it in at Gamestop or you just don't have it anymore for some reason, then you should buy one again to relive your childhood memories! Don't you remember making Mii's on the Mii Channel or editing pictures on the Photo Channel or listening to the music of the Wii Shop Channel? Even if you buy one without any games, just the Main Menu alone has a ton of fun things to do that will bring back memories!
